North Star has named and delivered its latest service operations vessel (SOV), the Grampian Tweed, marking the completion of its fleet dedicated to supporting Dogger Bank, the world's largest offshore wind farm.
The Grampian Tweed is the fourth and final SOV built for the project, arriving ahead of schedule to enhance offshore operations in the North Sea. The vessel is designed to provide a safe and efficient working environment for wind farm technicians, with advanced features to support essential maintenance and daily operations.
The naming ceremony took place at the new Lowestoft Eastern Energy Facility, where representatives from North Star, Equinor, and SSE Renewables gathered alongside local stakeholders. The event was led by the vessel's godmother, a long-serving North Star crew member, and included a traditional blessing to mark the occasion.
North Star said the early delivery of all four vessels reinforced its commitment to high safety standards and environmental responsibility. The company highlighted its long-term partnership with Equinor and SSE Renewables, describing the fleet as an important step in the transition to cleaner energy and a more sustainable future.
Dogger Bank, located off the UK coast, will become the world's largest offshore wind farm when complete, with a generating capacity of 3.6GW. The wind farm's developers said the new vessel would play a crucial role in ensuring technicians could carry out their work safely and comfortably while supporting the farm's long-term maintenance and operational efficiency.
The handover of the Grampian Tweed also showcased the role of UK skills, talent, and expertise in the renewable energy sector. The ceremony took place in the same region where hybrid-powered craft for the project were built, highlighting the importance of British industry in delivering one of the most significant offshore wind projects to date.
