Solar. Wind. Energy storage. Biomass. Hydrogen.
That makes sense.
Each technology has its own characteristics and technical experience will always matter.
But as the UK renewable energy market matures, another distinction is becoming increasingly important.
What someone has actually done.
Technology Doesn’t Always Define the Role
Two people can spend years working in the same technology and develop very different experience.
One may have originated and developed projects from an early stage.
Another may have acquired projects once they were close to ready-to-build.
Another may have financed them.
Another may have taken them through construction.
Another may have managed the commercial performance of the assets once operational.
They may all describe themselves as working in renewable energy.
But they operate in very different talent markets.
The reverse is also true.
Someone who has spent their career developing solar projects may have more in common with somebody developing battery storage than with an investment professional working for another solar business.
Function can sometimes tell us more than technology.
Experience Is Increasingly Transferable
This becomes more apparent as businesses diversify.
Developers that started in solar move into storage.
Storage platforms add solar.
Investors deploy capital across multiple technologies.
Businesses that once concentrated on development begin owning and operating assets.
As that happens, the boundaries between individual technology markets become less rigid.
A strong investment professional brings experience in evaluating opportunities, structuring transactions and deploying capital.
A development professional understands how projects move through land, grid, planning and consenting.
A commercial professional understands how value is created and protected through contracts, route-to-market and asset performance.
A project delivery professional understands what it takes to move an asset from development into construction and operation.
The technology matters.
But so does the underlying capability.
Project Stage Matters Too
The skills a business needs also change as projects progress.
An early-stage development portfolio creates different challenges from a portfolio approaching financial close.
Projects entering construction require different capabilities again.
And operating assets create another set of commercial and organisational demands.
That means asking whether somebody has worked in solar, storage or wind is often only the beginning.
More useful questions might be:
What stage of the project lifecycle have they worked at?
What decisions have they been responsible for?
What level of commercial exposure have they had?
Have they originated, acquired, financed, developed, delivered or operated assets?
Those questions begin to reveal where somebody can genuinely add value.
Functional Depth Still Matters
None of this means technology experience is becoming irrelevant.
Some roles require highly specific technical knowledge.
Consenting an offshore wind farm is not the same as developing a small solar project.
Delivering a utility-scale battery project creates different challenges from constructing an onshore wind farm.
There will always be situations where direct technology experience is essential.
But there are also roles where making the technology filter too narrow can exclude people with highly transferable experience.
As organisations become larger and portfolios become more diverse, understanding that distinction becomes increasingly important.
A More Mature Talent Market
The renewable energy market is no longer simply a collection of individual technologies.
Projects move through investment, development, commercialisation, construction and operation.
People increasingly build careers around the functions that make those projects possible.
That is why it can be useful to think about the talent market in the same way.
Investment & Transactions.
Development & Origination.
Commercial & Asset Management.
Project Delivery.
Technology remains part of the picture.
But as the market matures, the question is increasingly moving from:
“Which technology have they worked in?”
to:
“What have they actually done?”
